SPONSORSHIP OF PARENTS & GRANDPARENTS
A Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada may be able to sponsor his / her parents and grandparents to become a permanent resident if he or she is at least 18 years old and must:
- support them financially
- make sure they don’t need social assistance from the government
- provide essential needs to parents and grandparents and their dependents:
- if the dependent child is less than 22 years of age when they become a permanent resident, you are financially responsible for them for 10 years after they become a permanent resident, or until they turn 25 years old, whichever comes first
- if the dependent child is 22 years of age or older when they become a permanent resident, you are financially responsible for them for three years after they become a permanent resident.
- Sponsored parents and grandparents and their dependents must go through:
- medical exams
- criminal checks
- background checks
Sponsored parents and grandparents and their dependents with a criminal record may not be allowed to enter Canada. People who pose a risk to Canada’s security are not allowed to enter Canada.
